Whilst looking at pasta delivery options for Valentines' Day, I came across Nonna Tonda and decided I couldn't wait a few more weeks to try it. Nonna Tonda was founded by couple James and Rebecca who went travelling across Italy in 2017 and brought back this delicious souvenir. The pasta is made fresh every morning by James to be delivered later that day as well as the homemade sauce using the best seasonal British produce and some Italian sourced ingredients.
Every week, Nonna Tonda shares a new menu consisting of two dishes (one vegetarian, one meat or seafood) from which you can choose according to your preference. Each box comes with a bag of fresh pasta, the sauce, garnish and parmesan. The kits start at £12.50 for two people, and there is the option to upgrade to four or six people which lowers the cost per person. When you sign up on the website you receive two weeks half-price (scroll down for a link!), making it such an affordable meal.
Our first delivery was Tortiglioni Carbonara with Pancetta and Guanciale, and it did not disappoint. Unfortunately, I managed to scramble the egg even though the instructions clearly advised on how to avoid it, so that's my mistake. The carbonara sauce was, nevertheless, delicious and the guanciale was an interesting addition to the dish which usually comes accompanied only by pancetta. The portion size was more than enough for two people, and we still managed to have leftovers for lunch the next day.
Our second order was the Parpadelle with Pork Shoulder and Beef Shin Ragu, and while the taste wasn't too different from others I have tried, it was rich and very comforting. The parpadelle was exceptional and gave the dish a refreshing switch from the more common spaghetti or tagliatelle. Fresh pasta is always exceptional, but Nonna Tonda manages to beyond exceptional by matching it with an equally delicious sauce.
The delivery is also worth a mention. Nonna Tonda has their own delivery service, meaning they are able to avoid delivery companies - which can sometimes be a hassle - and deliver personally at the door, maintaining a friendly and thoughtful service.
