Radio Lamington: a lockdown gem

There are sometimes good things to come out of bad situations and Radio Lamington is one of them. Born during the March 2020 lockdown, Radio Lamington has been delivering deliciously soft Aussie lamingtons up and down the country ever since. The business is part of the Daisy Green Collection, a series of Australian-inspired restaurants in Central London offering picture-perfect brunches.

If the Daisy Green Collection has done brilliantly with the decoration in all of its restaurants, with different moods and environments in each one, it has also certainly mastered the art of food delivery. At a time where people seek ways to access exciting getaways without having to leave their homes, it is not only the flavour that matters but also the experience which Radio Lamington certainly gives its customers.

Opening the box in which the cakes come in is a treat in itself. All the boxes are rose gold, with a pretty pink bow and closed with two small magnets, making it a box that you can keep even after you finish your lamingtons. Inside the box, there is also a card explaining the story of Radio Lamington and their charity campaign #aLamingtonforaLamington – with every box purchased, Radio Lamington donates a box to the NHS hospitals. On the other side of the card, there are drawings of each lamington flavour as well as their ingredients and allergens, even the ones that are not part of your box, which I must say is a great marketing strategy as it leaves anyone wanting to try every flavour.

There is a variety of boxes to choose from, from single flavour sets to mixes and gift boxes with wine or coffee. I chose the Signature Box which at the time stood at £28 plus delivery and came with six different lamingtons: classic; red velvet; rainbow; tiramisu; lemon, polenta and coconut, and Australian macadamia and honey. Our favourites had to be the tiramisu and the Australian macadamia and honey since they both had the best sponge-filling combination. The latter surprisingly had macadamia yoghurt cream instead of whole macadamias which was great for someone who, like me, does not enjoy nuts. The classic and the rainbow lamingtons were not as exceptional as the first two but still very tasty, and the white chocolate ganache on the rainbow one instead of the jam which comes with the classic version really worked wonders. Sadly, the red velvet and the lemon, polenta and coconut did not live up to our expectations… While for the first, the sponge and the cream cheese were delicious, the pieces of house raspberry and hibiscus jelly were so bitter that no one could stomach them. The second was gluten-free and therefore denser and not as fluffy as the other lamingtons, which was disappointing, but the flavour was still great. Overall, the experience was worth its price and those were the spongiest cakes I have ever eaten, beautifully complemented by the innovative fillings and toppings.

If you are looking for a fancy pick-me-up cake, or want to present someone with a tasty gift, Radio Lamington is certainly a good contender. I look forward to visiting any of the Daisy Green Collection restaurants when they reopen and having a delicious lamington once more.
